The original 0.37b5 code is roughly 20 years old but was later updated/optimized for portability and renamed to mame4all, then picked up again and optimized for the Pi. Technically the main code is 20 years old but it's been refreshed somewhere between the Pi 1 and 2 release dates I would guess 7 maybe 8 years old.

mame4all-rpi is an old an unmaintained MAME fork. It's only useful when using a Pi1/0, for it's speed. If you're using a Pi3B+, lr-mame2003 or lr-fbneo are recommended for arcade emulation. If you're having issues with ROMs, make sure you're using the right ROM set/collection for your emulator - see https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Arcade/.

So, what is the best Mame to use with a Pi 4 4GB. I'm currently using a Raspberry Pi 4-4GB, with the official Raspberry AC Adapter, and the summer build of RetroPi. I am curious as to what the best Mame is, I'm looking for the best compatibility, performance and largest library.

The emulation quality is at least 20yrs old and supports less games than the newer emulators. You can use fbneo for most games and then mame2016 for whatever fbneo runs slow or not at all. 4
